St. Joseph's College for Women, Alappuzha

DEPARTMENT OF Zoology

The Department of Zoology came into existence in 1959. Prof. Marykutty George was the first head of the department. Prof. Lilly Koshy (1961-1993) took over the reins followed by Dr. Cardoza Mildred Diana, Prof. Katherine Philip and Dr. Annie ThomasRev. Sr. Leelamma Joseph of the department served as the eighth Principal of the College. Sr. Leelamma Joseph  also served as the Provincial Superior of the Canossian congregation for the South Province. The services of Prof. Lilykutty Mathew, Prof. Tresa Anthraper and Rev Mother Teresina Prevedello during their tenure in the Department were commendable. Mettilda M. (Late), Smt. Mariamma, Shri. Joy P. M., Smt. Helen Fernandez and Smt. Mary Metilda  retired as lab assistants from the Department. 

The present Head of the Department is Asso. Prof. Rose MichaelAsso. Prof. Oriel D'coutho, Asst. Prof. Remya James and  Asst. Prof.Febby Payya  are the other members of the Zoology faculty. Smt. Mary Teresa Assuntha serves as the Lab Assistant.

The Department of Zoology promotes discovery and learning at all levels of biological organization (molecular, cellular, organismal, population, community, and ecosystem) and is a DST-FIST sponsored department. Our integrative focus reflects the importance of strong disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches in teaching. We strive for excellence and synergy in our coordinated programs of teaching and service. Recognizing the essential roles of science and biology in the lives of citizens today and tomorrow, we emphasize biological literacy in our teaching and outreach programs. Along with the subject knowledge we aim at inculcating spiritual and cultural values in the students.

The session explained the role of anti-microbial peptides which are host defensive in function, in the field of medicine. The activity of host defense peptides in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell was briefed in the session. The use of peptides for the treatment of cancer was informative to the participants.  Therapeutic potential and immunomodulation effects of host defense peptides was a new knowledge for the participants.

The department organized a UGC sponsored 2 day National seminar on the Topic “Recent Advances in Mariculture and its possibilities in Kerala Coast” in collaboration with Matsyafed, Alappuzha and Allappy Diocesan Society. The seminar proved to be the meeting ground for students, Research Scholars, Educators and Fish farmer to exchange experiences, knowledge, queries and insights in the field of mariculture and its scope in the Kerala coast.

OBJECTIVES

*      To create awareness among academicians, students and the fishermen folk about mariculture.

*      To motivate students to take up their higher education in this field.

*      To inculcate an interest and sensitize the young minds to carry out innovative research in the field.

The entire two day programme was scheduled with an inaugural session followed by six technical sessions which winded with a formal valedictory function at Mararikulam beach.

 

The inaugural session commenced with 9.30am in the Mother Fernanda Riva College auditorium which was presided by Dr.(Sr) Janat Augustine, Principal, St Joseph‘s College for Women, Alappuzha. Ms. Rose Michael, Associate Professor and Head of the Department welcomed the gathering. Inauguration of Seminar was made through the auspicious hands of the chief guest Dr. B Madhusoodana Kurup, Honourable Vice Chancellor, Kerala University Fisheries and Ocean Studies, Panangad, Kochi by lighting the lamp. He spoke at length about the relevance of topic of the seminar by correlating it to the happenings in the coastal areas of Kerala.

 

Dr. Chitra N R., Associate Professor and Head, Department of languages felicitated the gathering. Mrs. Febby payva, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology proposed the vote of thanks.

 

Six main themes were chosen for the venture and talks were given according to each theme in separate sessions.

The Valedictory was conducted in the Marrarikulam Beach. Dr. Sr. Janat Augustine, principal of the college presided over the function. Ms. Remya James, Assistant Professor, welcomed the gathering.  Shri. K.C. Venugopal, M.P, delivered the valedictory address in which he spoke about the necessity of imparting technological information regarding recent trends in aquaculture to fish farmers. It was followed by felicitations by Fr. Xavier Kudiamssery, executive Director ADC and SW society, Alappuzha and Shri. P.T. Joseph, District Manager, Mastyafed, Alappuzha.  Ms. Oriel D’coutho, Associate Professor delivered the vote of thanks.

There are three laboratories for the department. Zoology lab, Physiology lab and B. Sc. Lab. Zoology lab is utilized for conducting Cytology and Animal Diversity I & II practical in Zoology lab. Ecology and Physiology in Physiology lab. Animal Diversity I & II practical for the first year subsidiary students are conducted in the B. Sc. Lab. Laboratories are also used to carry out experiments in relation to project and field study. Instruments used for practical work, projects and research are maintained in the Zoology and Physiology lab. 

Physiology Lab is equipped with Audio-visual facilities.

-          Dr. Annie Thomas being the management committee member of Mahila Mandir associated with the organizing committee for conducting the marriage. This was one of the major extension activities of the department.
