 Home Science is an evergrowing, dynamic interdisciplinary field, in the faculty of science that prepares its students to develop themselves with multiple vocational and career options. Home Science is a burgeoning field with full of possibilities and on that is expected to see a remarkable bloom over the next decade. The far sighted vision and zealous effort of foundersof college has culminated in the establishment of the department of Home Science affiliated to University of Kerala in the commencement of UG course in June 1960 under the initiative of Sr. Olive Rodrigues who was the second Principal of the college.The motive of our programme includes not only preparing students to earn the academic credentials but also pursue to function in society as a professional upon which practitioner competency can be built.

   Mother Griselda Vettori, Sr.Joyce de Melo, Sr.MariaChacko, Smt. LeelaCherian, Smt. Baby J.,Punnoran, Ms.KasturiBai G B    were the pioneers of the department, heading its helm in the years that came by Smt. Lucy Sebastian who followed (HOD 1999 – 2012) was instrumental in running the UGC vocational course in B.Sc. Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics (1999 - 2004) and also initiated the work for the up-gradation of the department to Post graduate level. Smt. Anju M Neeliyara joined the department in 2005 and assisted in driving the department through the rough terrains. The department completed 50 years of meritorious service in 2010 and was upgraded to a postgraduate department in the year 2013-14. The department was selected as the ‘best innovative’ department of the college in academic years 2009-10, 2012-13, 2015-16 and 2016-17.  Currently, the department team comprises of Dr. Anju M. Neeliyara (HOD), Dr. Bhagya D (Asst. Prof.), Smt. Jiby Abraham (Asst. Prof.), Smt. Neethu Jose (Guest Faculty) and Smt. Thara C.M(Guest Faculty).

Since the inception the Department has witnessed phenomenal growth from an undergraduate institution to a leading post-graduate institution with a strong component of research. Besides being a Premier institution, the department has been fortunate in receiving grants from the UGC and CPE fund for development of infrastructure, for strengthening teaching and research.

The courses and learning experiences in the department are designed in such a way as to provide an understanding of physical, biological and social science perspectives that will enable them to choose one of these as their specialized career at post graduate levels.It promotes individual character development, increases one's professional skills, develops insights into home and family living, and prepares students to enter a wide range of career options.Our academic preparation through post-graduation backs continued proficient growth to meet personal, professional, community and world- wide evolving health care needs and is committed to improve and advance the profession of nutrition and dietetics through two national internships at reputed hospitals within the curriculum. The department has been involved in teaching, research and extension in the various specializations of Home science since its inception.

The department has two well -equipped state of the art laboratories – Nutrition and Biochemistry lab and Textile Science lab - catering to the academic research needs of the students. The instruments and equipments in vogue are readily made available to the students with the purchase of the high end equipments using financial assistance under FIST.

The department has a separate Home Science cottage for the residential stay of the final year BSc students and can boast of being the only Home Science college of the University of Kerala with a well-established separate cottage. The students during their stay get an opportunity to practically apply all the theoretical aspects they have acquired through classroom study.

Extension activity and outreach programmes are organized regularly by the department like medical camps, workshops and awareness programmes. The department in collaboration with various national and state agencies viz NRHM, NUHM, Food and Nutrition Board, Inner Wheel,Eastern companies, also conducts and observes National Nutrition week, Breastfeeding promotion week, World Food Day etc. Entrepreneurship Skill Development Programmes were conducted for aspiring women of the community on various themes in collaboration with MSME Training Centre.Field training in assessment of dietary and nutrient intake and also biochemical and nutritional status assessment, and field visits to Chocolate factory, MILMA, Consumer Court, Anganwadis, children’s home, old age home, textile mills, Spice garden and historical places forms an important component of the programme at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.The department organizes and conducts exhibitions, seminars, conferences, lectures, E presentations and workshops to create awareness and update students and community on recent emerging health and social issues and it’s combating. Students are encouraged to take up government aided student projects, SPYTiS II (KSCSTE) and make presentations and publications at national and international levels and pursue research in premier research institutions. Faculty enrichment programmes viz MOODLE, Course Design, IPR and skill development programmes on bag making, food preservation, soft toy making, fabric painting, Apparel Designing, flower making, wealth from waste are also organized for faculty, students and community.

Courses Offered:

B.Sc. Home Science  :The state of the art course is a professional course in science definedas study of those principles, conditions and ideals which are concerned, on the one side, with immediate and physical environment of man and on the other, with his human nature”.In very simple words Home Science can be defined as the multidisciplinary field of study that deals with health, diet, caring child, textile and garment designing, managing resources and other subjects concerned with a home.Its scope extends far beyond the ‘home’, as the area covered by the subject is vast and varied offering a wide arena of career opportunities including those as dietitians, project assistants, teachers at lower levels etc.

M.Sc. Nutrition and Dietetics: The MSc Home Science course was sanctioned under the aided stream in the year 2013-14 with Nutrition and Dietetics as the specialization, a professional course designed to develop skills in all aspects of Nutrition and Dietetics and also to foster a firm theoretical background with amalgamation of practical skills and development of research related abilities. The course structure is strengthened by the inclusion of two internships in reputed hospitals during the course period itself, which offers a hands on training opportunity to the students. The alumnae of the course has an excellent placement record to offer, with employment opportunities in various multispeciality hospitals.

Certificate course in Tailoring and Garment Construction:  This is a three month course offered to students of other departments to develop their self help skills.

Seminars and workshops 2017-2018


  • An activity workshop on Mind Mapping Technique was delivered to PG students by Smt. Jiby Abraham on Nov.28th. PG students were encouraged to create mind map on a topic based on their curriculum with the technique.
  • Ms. Anju Jose, Diet Technician, Van Couver General hospital, Canada gave an interactive session and motivational class on ‘Overseas Careers in Nutrition and Dietetics’  for PG students of the department on July 17th.
  • Dr Anju.M.Neeliyara and  Smt. Thara. C.M gave awareness classes on ‘Health and Hygiene for adolescents’  for the students on Aug.10th.
  • Smt Jiby Abraham delivered an awareness class on ‘Campus Behaviour’ for the students on Aug 10th.
  • Dr. Bhagya D and Neethu Jose delivered classes on ‘Career prospects’ for the students on August 10th.
  • Dr. Chitra.S. Librarian conducted an orientation class on  the topic ‘Plagiarism ’ for PG students on July 14th. I & II PG students of the department attended the class organized in the textile lab.
  • A training programme  on ‘Makeover’ was arranged for the students Mrs. Pooja Lama, Area Manager of MAC Cosmetics, Dubai delivered   a class and gave a hands on training to students on Aug.18th.
  • An E- lecture on the topic ‘Novel applications of gelatin’ was given by  Dr. J.S. Suresh Kumar, GM (R&D), Nitta Gelatin Company Ltd. On November 9th.
  • The department coordinated the ‘Amritham Nutrimix’ District level competition-2017, for Anganawadi  workers conducted by the Social Justice Department and ICDS, Alappuzha on Sep.26th. Twenty four ICDS members participated in the competition. Dr. Anju.M.Neeliyara was a judge in the Amritham Nutrimix District level competition 2017.
  • Learning Management System workshop on ‘Effective course delivery using MOODLE’ was conducted in two phases by the department for the teaching faculty  in collaboration with ICT Academy of Kerala, Trivandrum. Mr. Riji.N.Das was the resource person for the training conducted on  14th & 15th Nov and 7th & 8th Dec. respectively.

Go Green Initiative -

Students celebrated World Environment day on June 5th 2017  by preparing and distributing paper bags  to near by shops and sensitising  on environment  protection.

An exhibition was organied on medicinal plants.

Home Science Association Inauguration

The activities of the Home Science association were officially inaugurated by the Principal Dr Sheena George on 9th November,2017. The importance of learning Home Science was stressed in the inaugural address by the Principal. An official welcome to the first year degree and post graduate students was arranged which was followed by variety entertainments.

Demonstration Class on HOBBY IDEAS

A  demonstration on hobby ideas was organised in association with Fevicryl India Ltd. on January 4th 2018 for the interested students of the College.  

E-Lecture on application of Gelatin in everyday life

An inaugural E-Lecture  was organised by for the students on application of gelatin in everyday life.The talk was delivered by Dr.J.S .Suresh ,manager ,Nitta Gelatin India .Ltd.

Entrepreneurship Skill Development Programme on Fancy Bag Making


Entrepreneurship Skill Development Programme on Fancy Bag Making was organized from Aug.26th to 11th October. Fifty aspiring women entrepreneurs were trained by eminent resource persons from different fields. On 27 November 2017, one hour workshop on mind mapping was conducted by Smt. Jiby Abraham for 12 students of Ist M.Sc. Nutrition and Dietetics. Mind mapping is a learning technique which helps in easy assimilation of ideas, concepts and interpretation. Exercises were done by the students on a topic in Human Physiology (Blood). 


E –lecture on the topic “Novel Applications of Gelatin” was delivered by Dr J S Suresh Kumar, General Manager - R&D, Nitta Gelatin India PVT LTD. Gelatin is an inevitable element in the life of human beings having applications in pharmacology and food industry. The lecture offered interactive learning and personalized form of self regulated learning opportunity for the delegates.
